We forgive him not because he had a heart as figuratively good as his literal one sucked, or because he knew more about how to hold a cigarette than any nonsmoker in history, or because he got eighteen years when he should’ve gotten more.’
‘Seventeen,’ Gus corrected.
‘I’m assuming you’ve got some time, you interupting bastard.
‘I’m telling you,’ Isaac continued, ‘Augustus Waters talked so much that he’d interupt you at his own funeral. And he was pretentious: Sweet Jesus Christ, that kid never took a piss without pondering the abundant metaphorical resonances of human waste production. And he was vain: I do not believe I have ever met a more physically attractive person who was more acutely aware of his own physical attractiveness.
‘But I will say this: When the scientists of the future show up at my house with robot eyes and they tell me to try them on, I will tell the scientists to screw off, because I do not want to see a world without him.’
I was kind of crying by then.

…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.

And that’s true! I know that many people say that love can kill you but they are SO WRONG. Love can’t kill you. Love can only DESTROY you which is TOTALLY ENOUGH for you. You know, it’s so horrible because it makes you so vulnerable…”It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.”- Yeah, they do this, people DO IT. They have NO MERCY on you. They do it every day and they will continue doing it again and again. So, next time when love knocks on your door just say: “Go away. You are illusion.” But I know I am a LIAR. I am a liar. A liar, a liar, a liar because I love to love. And I know that I will give a piece of me to you…because this is ME. And love will EAT ME and LEAVE ME crying in the darkness. But who cares? ‘Cause this is NOT LOVE. It’s ILLUSION – in my mind, in your mind, in everything. But that piece of me..IS LOVE…is a piece of my heart, of my soul, of my body, of everything. And this piece is not an illusion, it’s not a lie. BUT it hurts because it matters. This whole life hurts. ‘Cause people are MONSTERS. But they CAN’T kill you! ONLY music can do this. And last night…when this phenomenal guy Richard Clayderman was in front of me, I was crying. And I cried for music….for this feeling which is so killing…And I can try to build up my defenses….but tunes will destroy them….and I will be dead.
And if I DIE young bury me in satin
Lay me down on a BED OF ROSES
Sink me in the RIVER at dawn
Send me away with the words of a LOVE SONG.
— Sinfonia Titanic by Richard Clayderman
